The Sleepy Lagoon Case and the subsequent Zoot Suit Riots are pinnacle moments in Latinx history in the United States. However, they are not well known events because far too often, the narratives of minority groups are excluded from American history. Therefore, I think Zoot Suit and Luis Valdez as a playwright are important contributors to Chicano theatre. In fact, Luis Valdez is one of the pioneers of Chicano theatre and the field would not be what it is today if he had not contributed works like Zoot Suit and the actor of El Teatro Campesino. It provides culturally competent context in regards to a clear case of discrimination and prejudice towards the Chicano community in LA. It also incorporates elements of "spanglish" and magical realism to an extent in that the Pachuco is not a real character but Henry's alter ego. Since the play was written in the 1970s, it helped establish many of these traditions into the field. Therefore, I believe that considering the history of Chicano theatre, Zoot Suit is one of the most important works written.
